Are you monitoring your process capability where
it really counts?
In our experience, many companies that claim to be committed
to using statistical tools to improve quality are just monitoring
test logs.
The quality engineers analyse samples from the test logs at "regular
intervals" which, given the fact that we are all overworked,
actually means whenever they manage to squeeze some time to do so
- or when something goes wrong.
We thought that it seemed a bit like "missing the boat"
so we asked a few more questions.
- Why were quality engineers not monitoring Process Capabilities
at the same time that they are acquiring the data?
- More to the point - why were they not monitoring on the
same machine that they use for taking the measurements?
Real Time Process Capability Measurement helps
you deliver good products consistently - if you do it right!
Real Time monitoring seems to be applied only on slow processes,
not in the high-speed high volume environment where it is really
needed.
The problem seemed to arise because all the best SPC software
was designed for monitoring things like metal stamping or oil refineries,
not high tech production.
True this software was really powerful, but it was also really
slow.
One package that we looked at took several seconds to add a single
data item to a plot. Not good if you are measuring four variables
at three parts per second… Not only did it take longer to update
the data than it did to acquire it - the SPC software even slowed
down the production process!
Most packages were so bloated that they needed more memory than
the monitoring software.
Some of the packages used poorly documented data communication
protocols, which makes the system integrator's job next to impossible.
That's why we designed the world's
first high speed, real-time, small footprint SPC monitoring software
that runs on the acquisition device.
Catch process problems before they catch you!
